« Apus apus, called the black swift, is a bird belonging to the Apodidae family. They are well known in Europe and easily recognizable in flight by their shape. Small birds, their skull is very fragile making study more difficult.
So how to do it?
The use of CT scan is very useful in anatomy, especially for paleontology, because it allows us to digitize specimens with scans. Thanks to this we can reconstruct the objects in 3D and thus have on a computer a specimen identical to the original version.
The method is non-destructive allowing the access to external anatomical information (the shape of the skull for example) and even internal anatomical information (the internal ears for example) avoiding the risk of destroying a specimen belonging to osteological collections.”
